Best Interest Assessment FAQs

Answers for commissioners and families alike. For anything else, call 01482 770330 — a person answers, not a menu.

Can we commission a single urgent assessment, or only block volumes?

Both. Many authorities start with a single urgent case; block arrangements with volume pricing are available when you’re ready.

Are your assessors independent?

Fully. We hold no interests in care providers, and conflict-of-interest checks are part of every allocation. Independence is the entire value of an external BIA resource.

What qualifications do your assessors hold?

All hold a recognised Best Interest Assessor qualification, current professional registration (Social Work England, NMC or HCPC), enhanced DBS and indemnity insurance, verified annually.

Is DoLS being replaced by LPS?

The Liberty Protection Safeguards remain postponed, and DoLS continues as the law in force. We track developments closely and will support commissioning authorities through any transition.

As a family member, do we have to pay for anything?

No. DoLS assessments are commissioned and funded by the Local Authority. Our guidance and information packs for families are free, in multiple formats.

Our relative can’t speak — can they still be assessed?

Yes. Assessors are experienced with non-verbal communication and dementia, and draw on observation, records, staff and — above all — the knowledge of people who love the person.

Guides are available in multiple formats, including easy-read and large print.
